- Summary:
- The Government of India has prohibited a transgender individual from pursuing a career as an aviation pilot. Some of the reasons cited for deciding Adam Harry, the subject of the case, was "unfit to fly" were gender dysphoria and hormone replacement therapy. If Adam wants to become a pilot, then he would have to stop taking hormones. Should he choose his career over his gender identity? The case discusses the reasoning of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, a statutory body of the Government of India, in greater detail by examining the laws and medical guidelines of the country. Many other countries, like South Africa and the United States, have allowed LGBTQ+ pilots using hormone replacement therapy to fly. What are certain steps that the Government of India should undertake to become more inclusive of trans individuals who wish to seek employment in the aviation industry?
