- Summary:
- On January 2, 2023, the sports world watched as Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin lay motionless on the football field. He had just made a tackle and got to his feet-then he collapsed. The stadium was mostly silent, with fans confused and concerned. As everyone who saw the injury tried to explain-or guess-what had happened, ESPN commentators were tasked with the same challenge, except they had an audience of millions of viewers. Nearly 20 minutes later, as Hamlin was loaded into an ambulance and rushed to a local hospital, there was still no confirmed information of what had occurred. Players went to their locker rooms, ESPN transitioned to its studio, and there were no updates on the situation. How do journalists explain events with no more information than what they saw? Students will be asked to explain the challenges involved with, and how to successfully respond and report on, a story when they have no additional information from those who saw the breaking news occur.
