- Summary:
- University of California Berkeley (UCB) Haas School of Business' (Berkeley Haas) Chou Hall was challenged to achieve TRUE Zero Waste certification on a short timeline with a lack of resources to become the first academic building in the country to achieve that honor. Stakeholders including faculty, students, custodians, and visitors needed to change ingrained-wasteful-habits and pack out all trash. Chou Hall had LEED Platinum and WELL certifications, so pressure was on to achieve the third "green" certification which aims to divert waste from landfills. The 10-campus UC system's goal was to be a climate change leader, specifically to achieve Zero Waste by 2020 and Carbon Neutrality by 2025. Chou Hall's TRUE certification would make significant progress towards that otherwise far-off goal and demonstrate such change is possible.
