- Summary:
- Environmental interest groups are currently faced with a profound dilemma. The demands placed on our energy resources are set to spike in the years ahead. Traditionally, we have relied on fossil fuels to meet those demands; as yet, green energy sources have been unequal to the task. However, predictions of climate catastrophe have only grown more dire. Is that mounting tension enough to push humanity toward accepting the previously unpalatable alternative of nuclear power? For many environmental activists and scientists, the answer is a resounding "Yes." This case study contrasts three historic arguments leveled against nuclear power with the evidence science has to offer on evaluating those claims. First, there is the matter of disentangling the development of nuclear weapons from that of the power alternative. Second, fears of mushroom clouds precipitated by power plant accidents loom large. Third, questions of what is to be done with nuclear waste have to be confronted. Bearing all of these challenges in mind, can nuclear power be a safe, green alternative to resolve the impending climate crisis?
