- Summary:
- Ravinder Gupta was recruited as shop floor manager at the Japanese company Steel Systems Limited (SSL) in January 2023, with the objective of improving product quality and productivity. Gupta's experience included working in a reputed U.S. company, SSL's main competitor in India. During Gupta's half-yearly performance appraisal, held in mid-June 2023, the leadership team was very happy with the unprecedented results achieved: the defect rate had dropped from 2.2% in January 2023 to only 0.02% in June 2023, and production had also increased by 10%. However, when the team learned that the performance improvement was driven by staff incentives Gupta had purchased with his own money, they were worried. They wondered whether such initiatives should be encouraged or discouraged. What could be the impact of their decision on the rest of the organization?
