- Summary:
- Examining the opening scene from one of the most iconic films in American cinema, Raiders of the Lost Ark, provides a strong lesson in risk management. While the risk here is mortal rather than economic, the lesson in how to plan for everything imaginable and then still be forced to deal with the unexpected is relevant. Indiana Jones, the main character, is a professor of archaeology who travels the world obtaining rare antiquities for further study. To make the story compelling, the movie has these antiquities surrounded by traps, puzzles, and enemies that Jones must either circumvent or defeat. To increase his chance of success, Jones undertakes extensive study and thorough preparation before departure. But in this example, as in all of his adventures, the unexpected invariably arises. Jones is then forced to improvise and use additional skills in his toolbox (such as strength and tenacity) to overcome these unplanned obstacles. This case study encourages students to understand the value of advance planning and of keeping numerous contingency plans at hand. It also underscores that unpredictability exists, and business leaders should avoid wavering in the face of unexpected, time-sensitive challenges.
