- Summary:
- Angel Yeast, based in China, is planning to establish more plants in the international market, and develop new biological products. However, they are dealing with a shortage of talent and raw materials. Can they leverage their innovation capabilities to successfully expand their business? Established in 1986 with just a patent and a limited fund, Angel Yeast has rapidly grown into a well-known public listed company in China and one of the top three yeast producers in the world, covering various yeasts, yeast extracts, nutritional and health products, and biological feed additives. In the beginning, the company was transformed from a research lab under the aegis of the high-tech office of the local government, with only a dozen staff, and knew very little about the sourcing of raw materials, production, or the markets for yeast. But through continuous innovation and entrepreneurship, Angel Yeast has overcome various barriers and difficulties in its production, sourcing, marketing and management. Currently, while facing new challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, carbon-emission limits, turbulent international markets, and geopolitical uncertainty, company leaders are holding firm to their dream to become "a hundred-year company." This case will introduce and discuss Angel Yeast's various innovations under a disadvantaged situation of shortage of talent, raw materials, and market. Students are encouraged to think and debate on the company's past innovation practices and future development.
