Summary:
While developing Astek Diagnostics (AstekDx), Mustafa Al-Adhami personally transformed from scientist engineer into a founder and health technology business leader. His challenging journey from Iraq through Europe to the United States prepared him to overcome obstacles and recognize when to pivot. Through Al-Adhami's experiences with tiny mosquitoes and exceptional medical mentors in his home state of Maryland, he developed a plan and team that could scale. This case focuses on Al-Adhami and his journey to leadership at AstekDx, a U.S.-based company he founded in 2020 to develop technology for swift antibody susceptibility testing. It finds him in 2023 with a new infusion of investment and big plans to revolutionize point-of-care diagnostics as well as improve health care outcomes across generations of patients. By detecting a bacterial infection in urine within an hour of the test and telling providers what prescription can fight it, Al-Adhami hopes he will contribute to deflecting a major threat to global health. The primary goal of this case is to demonstrate tools and methods that can enable entrepreneurship. For example, using rejection as a motivator and refining communications can help entrepreneurial people achieve business success. Students will see how immigration challenges and proactive choices around education help build critical skills for executive leadership. They will explore tactics for enhancing executive communications and teambuilding. They will also learn how an engineer CEO figures out how to span boundaries and pivot his health tech business.
