- Summary:
- Graduation from college is not an automatic ticket to a job. This case study reviews the job-search odyssey of Jack, a first-generation college graduate. He took the steps that would seemingly enhance his likelihood of landing a job soon after graduation. Jack utilized the university's Career Services Office and followed its advice in every detail. Nonetheless, he remained unemployed after six months despite numerous applications. Jack was placed in contact with a successful alum who would guide him using the know-how of a seasoned professional. What Jack learned is that a job search has to be tailored to the intended audience, and that application materials, including social media, can no longer be assumed career-appropriate unless edited to remove unsuitable content. Not only does image matter, but references from relevant industry leaders are uppermost in cutting through application barriers. Students will be asked to reflect upon their own job aspirations and whether they are positioning themselves to achieve employment success upon graduation.
