This case study reports qualitative longitudinal research that draws on the extended case method to investigate how contextual factors shaped the psychological contracts of business expatriates over a 4-year period and how these psychological contracts impacted their intentions to stay and continue to engage productively in Western Australia. The relevance of the research is justified by the significance of skilled migrants to Australia's economic development. This case study details the rationale behind the research methods adopted as well as some challenges and strategies. It presents the principles of the extended case method and discusses how this methodologic approach can support qualitative criteria. It also highlights how computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software can support qualitative analysis and reporting.
