- Summary:
- Academic research was instrumental in the European colonization of Indigenous people, and the basic colonizing structure of the "researcher" and "researched" remains in place today. Artistic collaborations between Indigenous communities and academic researchers can be an effective method for decolonizing this research relationship. The decolonizing potential of collaborative art lies in its ability to decenter the authority of academic expertise by foregrounding our shared human capacity for creative expression. Making art together fosters bonds of trust and friendship that are essential for building more just, mutually beneficial relationships. Art projects empower community members to validate, prioritize, and express Indigenous knowledge, stories, and visions on their own terms, while also helping academics find ways of doing and representing their research in ways that do not depend on exclusionary methods and language. In this case study, I explore how an artistic collaboration to create a children's book with an Indigenous community had a decolonizing effect on the research relationship.
