Summary:
Drawing on my doctoral research experience about the Toronto playground movement at the turn of the 20th century, this case study illustrates how to conduct a historical analysis of textual and visual sources and use a playful methodology, a novel reading of archival texts that builds on the work of Rose and Legg. In addition, this case highlights the challenges of working on topics related to children, who are often absent from archives. The reader will learn how to find playful traces in the archives, how to make the most of sparse records, and how to approach these sources creatively, with a broad humanities lens.
