- Biography/History:
- Tyler H. Smith was born on April 21, 1928 in Dallas, Texas. He and his mother, Ruby Graves Harrison, moved to California after 1930. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1946, where he served as part of the Information and Education section of the Eighth Army in Japan. Upon his return to Berkeley, California, he married Floria Dean Fischer in the early 1950's. They had three children, Tyler Henry (1952-2024), Gordon and Deborah. He ran an employment agency and was active in local politics. Smith died on January 20, 1976.
- Summary:
- This volume, carefully titled by hand on the first page, "Photography's in Japan, 1946-1947 by Tyler H. Smith" contains black and white photographs detailing Smith's service in the U.S. Army while stationed in Japan following World War II. There are several photographs of fellow servicemen, some of which are signed, at work, as well as some commanding officers. As a member of the Eighth Army and Information and Education section, Smith was a staff reporter for the Yobas weekly news, and page 2 of the December 14, 1946, issue is included in the album. Also included is a certificate indicating Smith had completed 40 hours of an Information and Education course at Keio University in Honshu, Japan. The album also contains photographs of Japanese landscapes, buildings and locals.Several loose photographs, a telegram from his mother and a hand drawn map that had been laid in the volume were placed in folders. This volume is bound in lacquered covers with a metallic image of Mt. Fuji and a traditional Asian building. The volume is lacking a spine and folios 22 and 24 are blank.
