Summary:
Immunology and immunotherapy have made significant advancements in basic, translation, and clinical research. For example, since the link between the immune system and cancer was solidly established about 20 years ago, cancer immunotherapy has emerged as a mainstream treatment modality. The connection between biophotonics and immune responses was established when the immune responses induced by photodynamic therapy were noticed about 30 years ago. Since then, biophotonics induced immune responses attracted steady attention, providing the impetus for a platform for researchers, clinicians, and entrepreneurs to exchange ideas and to collaborate. The Conference Biophotonics and Immune Responses ́at Photonics West was established in 2006, in response to the increased interest in this area. At the time when we celebrate its 20th anniversary, I would like to reflect how the conference was established and evolved, how people forged collaborations and friendships at the conference, and how companies were formed and strived from the interactions at the conference. This talk aims to inspire people to think ahead and lead the research in new, promising fields.
