Summary:
"This film, the first in the Mysterious China series, explores China’s southwest today, as well as its fabled history. On his death bed, Marco Polo stated, “I have only told you half of what I saw!” We believe him. This famous Venetian explorer had praised the exotic beauty of Yunnan Province, the magical “land beyond the clouds.” Poets praised Yunnan as “Shangri-La,” the imaginary, remote, idyllic hideaway where humans live in near perfection. Today, Yunnan remains enigmatic for many. The cultural diversity of its many minorities has survived for thousands of years. The “Middle Kingdom” of China was a cradle of civilization. Today’s China goes all-out to preserve this heritage. It remains to be seen whether or not the remnants of China’s rich cultural heritage can survive the onslaughts of the 21st Century. “Marco Polo’s Shangri-La” will show you the China that once was—and still is, for many—a land of mysteries."--From Heritage Broadcasting Service
