Summary:
Nunavut-based director Zacharias Kunuk and researcher and filmmaker Dr. Ian Mauro teamed up with Inuit communities to document their experience and knowledge regarding climate change. This documentary, the world’s first Inuktitut-language film on this topic, takes the viewer “on the land,” together with Inuit elders and hunters, exploring the social and ecological impacts of a warming Arctic. This film helps viewers appreciate Inuit culture and insight regarding environmental change and Indigenous adaptations. Exploring centuries of Inuit knowledge and allowing the viewer to learn about climate change first-hand from Arctic residents themselves, it displays Inuit expertise regarding their land and its wildlife and makes clear that climate change is a human-rights issue affecting this ingenious Indigenous culture. It tells stories about Arctic melting and the Inuit belief that both human and animal intelligence are key to adaptability and survival in a warming world.
