- Summary:
- The news of the discovery of a New World, full of wonders and treasures, ran like wildfire through the Europe of the time, expanding in size and wealth as it crossed borders, until it ended up turning the route of the Indies into an immense golden channel, to which corsairs, pirates and adventurers of all hair and nationality flocked in droves. The discovery of America will be an unimaginable source of wealth for Spain, which will try by all means to exploit them exclusively, through the design of a naval system never seen before. The Fleet of the Indies was a pioneer regular merchant line that, strongly protected by the Spanish Navy, connected twice a year the metropolis with its distant colonies. The rest of the European powers will try for more than two centuries to break the Spanish monopoly and access these riches, using all the means at their disposal; smuggling, piracy, privateering or direct attack on the Fleet. But it will not be an easy task...
