Summary:
El perro del hortelano is a peculiar palatine comedy (a drama sub-genre from the Spanish Golden Age). Diana (Emma Suárez), the protagonist, is the countess of Belflor. She is an attractive, imaginative, and perceptive young woman, who breaks the stereotype of the female archetypal character of comedy; submissive and obedient. Diana falls in love with her secretary, Teodoro (Carmelo Gómez), who is engaged to Marcela (Ana Duato), a countess maid. Diana is deeply jealous of the romantic relationships of her subordinates. Teodoro's desire for her deepens, as he sees himself as the object of Diana's desire, which she cyclically ignites and frustrates. For this reason, El perro del Hortelano derives from a well-known saying, "he's like the gardener's dog, that eats no cabbage and won't let others either".
