- Summary:
- Diary recounts Maria Fay's trip through New York state to Niagara Falls, continuing to Montreal, Quebec City and St John's, and returning via Ticonderoga and Northampton to Boston. Travelling by stagecoach, canal boat, and steamer, Fay describes the towns, landscapes, and accommodation she encountered, including visits to Auburn Prison (Auburn, New York) and the Hotel-Dieu (Montreal), descriptions of slave examinations and Native American settlements. She travelled with five companions, and a list of expenses is included. Fay's name does not appear in the diary: identification of its writer came from the manuscript dealer from whom the diary was purchased.
