Summary:

Account of an 'art pilgrimage' through Italy, where Cornelia, her four daughters and her aunt Margaret sketch picturesque views and buildings during a three-month trip. Comment and observations are made on the Italian people, especially the role and status of women in Italian society. Much is written about their automobile. The Italians are surprised at seeing women drivers. The condition of the local roads and the packing of luggage are at times problems. Discussion between the women about the craft and technical skill of drawing and painting, and famous Italian artists' work they encounter. Evidence of the First World War, such as trenches, shell holes and forts, is seen in Italy, and they discuss the nature of the war with locals they meet. Popular tourist attractions they see include the Grand Canal, the Rialto Bridge, Castle Vecchio, Brunelleschi's dome, the Ponte Vecchio, the Uffizi Gallery, the Colosseum, the Arch of Titus, the Baths of Caracella, Pompeii, Mount Etna, Roman Campagna and the Dolomite Mountains. They come across many churches, cemetries, lakes, vistas, convents, mountain passes, frescoes, museums and galleries.
