- Morley Safer covered the war in Vietnam for most of 1965 and again in 1966. In 1967 he returned to Vietnam. This time American forces had largely taken over the War and their numbers continued to grow. For the new troops the journey to this strange place was a journey into the unknown. For those like Safer, returning to Vietnam, the flight to Saigon was a journey into the known. A known that was still confusing, frustrating and deadly.
