China invaded Tibet during the 1950s. Since then, several waves of protest have sought independence. Nun Ngawang Sangdrol and monk Bagdro, both followers of the Dalai Lama's nonviolent stance, led resistance to the Chinese government and suffered imprisonment and torture. Both were released amid Western pressure, but Tibet remains under Chinese control.
