- Summary:
- 'Close of Play' is a radical exploration of poetic drama, as an immobile and silent head of family sits as confessor to a quarrelsome family. Its range of operation, its sleight of hand, its command of varying modes of language, its use of monologue and chorus - all this moved it far away from its ostensible naturalism. 'Close of Play' was first performed in the Lyttelton auditorium of the National Theatre, London, in May 1979.
