- In 1991, Ryan Dant, a three-year-old Dallas boy, was diagnosed with MPS-1(Mucopolysaccharidosis). Mark Dant, the child's father, set upon a quest to fund research on the rare, fatal disease, which culminated in a meeting with Dr. Emil Kakkis, one of the few researchers studying MPS-1 who successfully alleviated symptoms of the disease through the administration of a synthetic version of the enzyme that MPS-1 children lack.
