- Prompted by the shortage of cadaver organs, Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City has pioneered a risky and complex surgical procedure called living donor transplant. The procedure involves the removal of half the liver from a healthy donor and its transplant into a sick recipient. Mt. Sinai voluntarily suspended the operation following the death of Mike Hurewitz who donated a portion of his healthy liver to his brother Adam.
