Summary:
"This edition makes available the ten extant art songs of John Knowles Paine (1839-1906), along with six partsongs for men's voices and an anthem for male chorus and organ. Three of the songs and four of the partsongs are published for the first time; all have been unavailable for many decades. In the songs, all from Paine's middle period, one notices the craftsmanship, individuality, and musical effectiveness characteristic of his better-known works. The music for men's voices dates from the Civil War era, when he was actively involved with Harvard choirs. These works are attractive, varied pieces, showing a definite skill in writing effectively for men's voices." -- Provided by publisher.
