Based on a libretto by Daniel Schiebeler, Don Quichotte belongs to a genre that leads directly to the singspiel. Telemann's approach to singspiel features carefully wrought solo and ensemble scenes, impressive not only for their handling of comic events involving the noble cavalier and his cunning shield bearer but also for the pre-classical style of the music.
