Summary:
"The work presented in this volume is the first Florentine comic opera and one of only two with extant music. Il potestà di Colognole established a number of comic opera conventions, including the use of dialect. The opera's composer, Jacopo Melani, and librettist, Giovanni Andrea Moniglia, were dominant figures in early Florentine comic opera. The music of Il potestà di Colognole reveals Melani's deft handling of the dramatic demands of comic theater, and the libretto attests to Moniglia's wit and innovative dramatic design. This volume, the first modern edition of an authentic comic opera from the seventeenth century, is an invaluable resource to both scholars and performers. It includes an English translation of the text along with the philological explanations provided by Moniglia in the 1689 edition of his collected dramatic works." -- Provided by publisher.
