- On the night of 13 May 1988, a column of the Shining Path ambushed a Peruvian army military convoy in the district of Cayara, Ayacucho, killing 4 soldiers and wounding 15 others. In response to the attack, in the following days, military patrols tortured, executed and disappeared some thirty people in Cayara. Now, every 13 May, the inhabitants of Cayara commemorate the tragic events in an intimate vigil where they strengthen their community ties.
