- Summary:
- Using the study of anatomy as metaphor, this case examines abnormalities found in a recruitment/selection process involving a job applicant and her mentor. The job applicant has applied to many work institutions, and four have offered contracts. Abnormalities center on what the job applicant tells, and does not tell, the several hiring institutions. Further problems are found in the mentor's decision not to be transparent in his letters of recommendation and in conversations with search committee members at each of the four institutions. The mentor becomes increasingly uncomfortable as it appears the job applicant respects few boundaries of professional ethics and standards. This case centers on one hire in academia, at the college/university level. However, the concern for professional norms, expectations, and assumptions found in the recruitment/selection process is common to all work organizations and professions. The issues in this particular case should be of concern to all employers and job applicants.
