Summary:
Delivering healthcare that is simultaneously high-quality, low-cost, and accessible is a daunting challenge. Aravind Eye Care System (AECS) has successfully overcome these challenges to provide cataract surgeries for hundreds of thousands of patients. Can their model be replicated in other contexts? AECS's approach illustrates the key elements of Michael Porter's Value-Based Healthcare Framework such as organizing around a medical condition, measuring costs and quality, aligning reimbursement with value, integrating care delivery both locally as well as across locations, and using information technology to support his agenda. This case underscores how strategy, structures, and processes need to be aligned and fueled by growing scale of operations to deliver value-based care. It also raises key questions about the applicability of AECS's approach to other disease conditions and healthcare delivery contexts outside India.
