Summary:
"The Independence Evening Post (Zi Li Wan Bao) was founded in 1947 as Taiwan’s first Chinese-language evening newspaper. It quickly established a reputation as the sole pro-independence, pro-democracy newspaper during the period of martial law in Taiwan (1949-1987)—covering political protests and state violence by the Kuomintang regime. The newspaper covered notable events in Taiwanese history, including the Zhongli anti-government protest (1977) and the Kaohsiung press crackdown and subsequent incidents of state violence (1979). During this period, the Independence Evening Post was associated with Tangwai—a democracy movement to elect independent candidates that was nominally tolerated by the government. The peak of the newspaper’s influence was in the mid-1970s, lasting through the transition to democracy in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Following the transition to democracy, the Independence Evening Post was notable for being the first Taiwanese newspaper to send reporters to mainland China. The government suspended the Independence Evening Post on three occasions in the early 1950s. During this period, the regime attempted unsuccessfully to take over the newspaper.Following Taiwan’s transition to democracy in the late 1980s and early 1990s, press restrictions were lifted and the media environment in Taiwan became more competitive. The Independence Evening Post changed ownership and editorial stance multiple times during this period. After a prolonged financial decline, the newspaper ceased publication in 2001.The Independence Evening Post Digital Archive is a valuable resource for scholars of history, politics, media studies, and East Asian studies. It also represents a valuable historical preservation project and may be of interest to institutions that study war, conflict, and authoritarianism"-- East View Global Press Archive
