Summary:
The alternative title of this book is "Thirty years a slave, and four years in the White House". She was the seamstress and confidante of Mary Todd Lincoln. There's an awful passage in this where she describes trying to stand up to a Mr. Bingham (slave owner) when he tries to whip/rape her, and her statements to stop him, but his eventual power enables him to hurt her. Her description of being tortured in that way is very distressing.
