Summary:
The catalogue features images from photographers present at the exhibition "Modern inside out: photography and the city, Brazil, 1890 - 1930". Such images highlight the contradictions and tensions present in the construction of the project of a modern country during the First Republic and represent the development of photography in Brazil in parallel with the consolidation of an urban culture in the country. For Heloisa Espada, organizer of the catalogue and curator of the exhibition, explains "the selection sheds light on the photographic production that was not contemplated by the Modern Art Week of 1922, but which was strongly present in the urban imagination of the time through the press, cinema, postcards, illustrated magazines and amateur production".
