- Summary:
- Between 1590 and 1623, Theodor de Bry and his sons Johan Theodor and Johan Israël (originating from Leuven) published a collection of texts about the non-European world. There is a West Indian series with works about America and the Dutch and English circumnavigations of the world (twelve volumes) and an East Indian series with works about Africa and Asia (eleven volumes). It shows how peoples in West and East were seen at the time. The texts are referred to as 'travel reports', but they are mainly land and people descriptions, and reports of the explorations and colonizations by Europeans. The De Bry collection shows the European expansion between 1492 and 1623. Many of the plates and the accompanying descriptions are about the way of life of foreign peoples and the actions of Europeans outside Europe. The Gates of the Indies is an analysis of these plates and texts. Parts from the De Bry collection were in the possession of nobles, humanists, magistrates, merchants and clergy at the beginning of the seventeenth century. They helped interested parties to imagine what it was like.
