- Summary:
- "The main mission of political activists is to promote democracy by safeguarding democratic rights and protecting vulternable groups from human rights violations. To serve this goal, political activists often protest at friction points (e.g., checkpoints). However, during ongoing conflicts and in cases where governments ask to enforce a specific policy, the presence of a vocal and physically present cadre of political activists often denotes in-group criticism, which may affect the security forces manning the friction points in various points in various ways. In this research, we test the effect of activists' presence on negative sentiment and support for anti-outgroup policies using the case study of Israeli military veterans (study 1) and then 135 American veterans (study 2) to fictional vignettes that manipulated the actions and messages of in-group political activists. Among Israeli veterans, results show that the activists' presence increases negative emotions among veterans, and in turn, leads to support for aggressive policies toward the out-group, namely, the Palestinians. On the contrary, among American veterans, results demonstrate a direct connection between activists' presence and opposed to aggressive policies toward migrants. We conclude that while political activists hope that their presence at checkpoints will increase the extent to which individuals from disadvantaged groups are treated with dignity and respect, in practice, their presence may create a backlash but in other cases it may help."-- Page 70.
