Summary:

In the early 1980s, a process of forced displacement began on Mexico's southern border: the original inhabitants of Santa Rosa and Nenton, Akateka Mayan communities in Guatemala, sought refuge in Mexican territory due to the military harassment they suffered from their government. Although this phenomenon of displacement occurs in other parts of the world, it rarely ends with the integration of the refugee community into the society that receives them, as is the case of El Colorado (also known as Nueva Libertad), in the municipality of La Trinitaria, Chiapas. Despite the fact that the process of establishing El Colorado was full of setbacks, inconsistencies and violations of the human rights of the refugees, as well as fruitless repatriation campaigns, its Akateko inhabitants managed to overcome the humanitarian crisis and naturalize as Mexicans, not without the support of national and international organizations, and of course, thanks to his own efforts to engage with the Mexican government. Although, unfortunately, it should be said that not all of the displaced achieved these citizenship conditions, so many families continue today in a situation of great vulnerability. In this context, "Memoria a través de la imagen" is a unique book that allows us to observe, through Keith Dannemiller's photographs and Verónica Ruiz's texts, how the process of adaptation and development of El Colorado, From the time it was a refugee camp to today when it is a Mexican community with social and political rights: what its inhabitants have left behind, what the new generations have incorporated, what they want to forget and what they do not want to stop remembering. Thus, in the Laboratorio Nacional de Materiales Orales We hope that this book will serve to strengthen the unity of the communities named here, their identity, their historical memory and their culture, now as Mexican populations.
