Summary:

Qualitative audio diaries are a novel research method in social care research. In this case study, audio diaries are audio records of one's verbal reflections kept over time. Audio diary methods enable research studying emotion in the workplace, including the complexity of feeling, revealing emotion as temporal and embodied, within an ever-changing social care context. However, using audio diary methods comes with an array of ethical dilemmas to consider, especially for practitioners working with young, marginalized, and traumatized populations. After reading this case study, students will be able to describe what qualitative audio diary methods are and how they can be used in research exploring emotions with social care practitioners, consider the potential ethical dilemmas of audio diary methods in qualitative emotion research, and design an audio diary method for their own research projects.
