Summary:
This case study is based on a research project set in the United Kingdom and India that aimed to understand the experiences of women who experience and report about violence to which they have been personally been subjected. While the initial focus of the study was on sexual violence, as fieldwork progressed, it emerged that sexual violence was not always an isolated matter. Rather, it was experienced along with other forms of violence, including domestic violence. This was an ethnographic study for which I used a combination of research methods: interviews, observations, analysis of documents, and reflective notes. This case focuses on using observation as a research tool. It attempts to address such questions as: What are the nuances of observation as a research tool?, How does one observe?, How does one navigate the ethical landscape when doing observational research?, and What challenges can one face when observing research participants?
