- Summary:
- The late Neolithic settlement of Bordjosh-on the banks of the Tisza River, about 50 km from today's Vojvodina, Serbia-seems to have differed from other settlements of the Pannonian Plain in 5,000 BC. Analysis of animal and plant remains there shows that people began settling Bordjosh circa 5,200 BC and that the settlement ultimately was consumed by fire. Around 4800 BC, the town was home to about 4000 people-a large population for the time and one with a surprisingly complex culture. Research on Bordjosh has cast new light on the Neolithic Period of southern Central Europe.
