Summary:
The Expedition's sailboat passes Tierra del Fuego, the "Land of Fire," and "The Lighthouse at the End of the World," and, sailing through treacherous sea ice, reaches Antarctica, the frozen continent filled with challenges never before experienced by the Schurmann Family. This visit lasts for 25 days, during which no refueling and no re-provisioning for food, water and other supplies is feasible. Before that, the episode segues to a visit with Gavin Menzies, former submarine commander in the British Navy, who in 2008 published a book entitled "1421: The Year the Chinese Discovered America," arguing that, between AD 1405 and 1433, the Chinese visited Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica, and the Americas, and were the first to circumnavigate the globe. Other writers disagree with this book's arguments, holding that the Chinese never got beyond the Eastern coast of Africa.
