Passing through the dreaded Drake's Passage after 25 days in Antarctica, the Expedition visits the Brüggen Glacier in southern Chile, the largest glacier in the Southern Hemisphere outside Antarctica. Along the way, despite the accompanying fog, the boat dodges the deadly "bergy bits," fragments of ice broken off the glacier into the ocean waters. The Expedition continues up the coast of Chile, then veers westward and off to Easter Island for a close look, including examination of the legendary moai, which some claim t have an Asian appearance Next, the boat sails on to Mangareva and other Polynesian islands, including Tahiti, and encounters huge, very photogenic, humpback whales.
