Summary:
The Expedition sets sail for China, stopping along the way in Micronesia, the Mariana Islands, Guam, and Okinawa. In Micronesia and Guam, they collect many bundles worth of trash- especially plastic bottles, aluminum cans and discarded sandals-for their on-board compactor, which reduces trash volume by 80 percent, and transport the resulting compacted bundles to a recycling center on Guam. One of the crew wins a wind-surfing contest along the way. After twelve days in Okinawa, they head for China's port of Shanghai, the largest port in the world by goods volume. Given the dramatically rising frequency of cargo ships as the Expedition's sailboat closes in on Shanghai, the crew is glad to have on board an advanced navigation system that tracks all nearby ships, which sounds an alarm if it detects any other ship on a collision course with theirs.
