Summary:
Euphrasian Basilica is one of the best preserved Early Christian complexes. As one of the most significant world historical monuments it was put on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List in 1997. Its current appearance dates back to the 6th century, although its first Early Christian basilica was erected in the 4th century. The cathedral complex in Poreč, on the coast of the Istrian Peninsula in western Croatia, is one of the best-preserved complexes of early Christian architecture in the world. It was named after Bishop Euphrasius who refurbished the earlier 5th century basilica, built on the site of an even earlier 4th century church. Bishop Euphrasius furnished the new basilica with an opulent mosaic and built the atrium with a four-sided portico next to the baptistry. He also constructed the diocesan building and the memorial chapel. He made his investment immortal by carving an inscription spanning the central apse of the cathedral. The Basilica has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997.
