Summary:
The historic paddle steamer "Patris," which sank in 1868, sits on the bottom of the Aegean Sea near Kea Island, Greece. It is a shipwreck unique in the Mediterranean Sea, perhaps in all of Europe, because it used paddle wheels to drive its motion. The ship was manufactured before the development of the screw propeller, when most ships were still made of wood. It was one of the few paddle ships made of metal, for which reason its wreckage survives to this day. A luxurious vessel, it also had sails. It was owned by the Hellenic Steam Navigation company, the first coastal shipping company in Greece. During filming, one of its two paddle wheels and two cannons were hoisted from 52 meters below the surface. It was then exhibited in a special museum wing at the Museum of Industrial Heritage of Syros, Greece.
