Summary:
Ishi survived, despite genocidal attacks upon his people that eliminated all of the rest of them. He continued to live in complete solitude in the remote wilderness of northern California for forty more years. In 1911, he walked out of the Butte County wilderness into Oroville, and then was relocated into contemporary Californian society, which had regretful attitudes toward Native Americans. Ishi was referred to in the press as "the last wild Indian." His story reminds us that, despite those attitudes, Native Americans and their cultures continue to be participants in, and contributors to, the civilization of contemporary North America.
