- Summary:
- This action packed documentary shows rarely filmed traditional hunting skills as Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders catch dugong, shark, turtles and wallabies. It considers the loss of culture by these people and their attempts to revive traditional skills. Includes footage of Eddie Mabo.
- From time immemorial, Australia's Aborigines, and their island neighbors to the north, have pursued hunting/gathering. Surrounded by long coastlines, their foraging has relied mainly on the bounty of the sea. Traditions and lore often governed the hunt. The coming of the white man suppressed many of these traditions and rendered the natives the vassals of a white man's administration. The drift of the younger generations away from their island villages, to the provincial towns, became a cause of concern for their elders. Their traditions and customs suffered a gradual decline, toward culture-death. In response, they mounted a revival of their traditional ways-old teaching young. These indigenous peoples are the "Timeless Hunters." This film documents their traditional skills in exploiting local hunting prey such as dugongs, turtles and sharks.
