Summary:
In the heart of the Amazon rainforest, archaeologists are busy debunking one of the most powerful myths put forward by colonialism. The so-called "primeval forest," described in 1492 by Christopher Columbus and then by other European colonialists as unsullied by human presence, never existed! Ironically, the Spanish explorer, Francisco de Orellana, navigated the entire length of the Amazon River in 1541-1552 and reported large human settlements and a complex civilization there, but his accounts were considered fanciful. Now, with archaeological finds revealing a once-dense population, Orellana's accounts are gaining credibility.
