Summary:
When did modern humans arrive in the Western Hemisphere? One of the great pursuits of archaeologists is to understand when and how our species spread from Africa across the entire planet. The American hemisphere is the last to have been colonized. Archaeologists had long thought that, to reach it, people passed on foot across the Bering Strait around 13,000 years ago. The current consensus pushes this date back to 15,000 years ago at least. However, recent discoveries suggest that people could have undertaken this great conquest much earlier. In the Serra Capivara National Park of northeastern Brazil, a Franco-Brazilian team has announced still earlier traces of the first Americans. In this special place, where since the 1960s more than 1300 sites decorated with cave paintings have been recorded, the archaeologist Eric Boëda discovered tools shaped from quartz pebbles, dated to at least 22,000 years ago.
