- Summary:
- In northwestern Saudi Arabia lies an ancient city that has never been truly excavated: the mysterious Hegra. In this region, reputed to be one of the driest in the world, people of antiquity have left their mark: a hundred tombs, carved into the rock. These tombs are the signature of a people of legend, the Nabataeans. Little was known about this necropolis lost in the middle of the desert until 2008, when the site was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and the Saudi government launched the first major excavations. A Franco-Saudi team gives a new history to these pre-Islamic vestiges long ignored. When and why did this city bloom in the middle of the desert? What was its power? And why was it abandoned? Scientists are now able to answer these questions.
